The Brock Environmental Center: Building Green for Cleaner Waters - Creating a
Center for Environmental Inspiration
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation built the Brock Environmental Center to engage, inform, and inspire generations about the environment and how we can all help Save the BayTM. The Center, located at Pleasure House Point in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is an innovative example of environmentally sensitive and smart building—among the first in the nation to embrace energy and water independence—and advances CBF's efforts to defend one of the nation's most valuable and threatened natural resources, the Chesapeake Bay. The Brock Environmental Center is designed to meet the strictest environmental standards in accordance with the Living Building Challenge™. The building's footprint uses less than an acre of CBF's 10-acre parcel, a very small percentage of the total area of Pleasure House Point.
With its solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal wells, rain cisterns, waterless toilets, and natural landscaping, the center is an international model for energy- and water-efficiency. Elevated 14 feet above sea level, it is also a prototype for coping with climate change in a region increasingly prone to flooding.
The Brock Center's Living Building Challenge Dashboard is a real-time gauge of the building's energy and water use and energy generation. Check it out for yourself at cbf.org/brockdashboard.
Field Trip Cost - There is no cost to attend this event, however registration is required.
