The following is sent on behalf of Conference Co-Chairs Pat Pate and Steve Rosenberg:
Esteemed local government professionals:
“The Future Starts Now. Are We Ready?” This is the question we aim to answer at VLGMA’s Winter Conference in Charlottesville, February 17-19, 2016. We hope you’ll make plans to join us for what we expect will be an engaging program.
Our three-day conference will be built on the foundation of a Thursday morning presentation by the Alliance for Innovation, based on their report “Next Big Things: The Future of Local Government 2016-2036.” Subsequent sessions on Thursday and Friday will relate to the four major forces and trends identified in the report—resources, technology, demographics and governance. And it all kicks off on Wednesday afternoon with an ICMA workshop on strategic thinking and strategic planning.
Featured speakers will include:
- Bob Gibson, Executive Director of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia;
- Jim Keene, City Manager of Palo Alto, California;
- Toni Shope, Strategic Initiatives Director of the Alliance for Innovation; and
- Ruth Walkup, Associate with the Commonwealth Center for High Performance Organization
We also have a couple of new offerings we are excited to share with you. One, a program on Shakespeare and Leadership, will blend entertainment with education, as educators and actors with the Staunton-based American Shakespeare Center approach the subject of leadership from a fresh perspective. The second will pair seasoned professionals with those newer to local government for speed coaching sessions.
Last but not least, there will be plenty of opportunity for networking and socializing, both at the conference hotel and out and about town.
Mark your calendars now, and as an added incentive to first-time attendees, we are pleased to offer a discounted rate.
We look forward to seeing you in Charlottesville.
Pat and Steve
