VA LTAP’s newest offering is an 8-week online course intended for people working in the transportation sector who want to strengthen or expand their understanding of statistics and data analytics. Leveraging the power of Excel spreadsheets, participants will have the opportunity to analyze a sample data set provided by the instructor, or use data collected from their own work environment. Familiarity with Excel is useful, but not required.
“The online format is an extremely effective way to deliver this type of course content,” stated Beth O’Donnell, Director of VA LTAP. “Not only will it allow working professionals to achieve meaningful professional development without the expense and inconvenience of travel and time off from work, but it will also allow us to expand the reach of VA LTAP training beyond our standard training audience. I am most excited about being able to empower capable and motivated individuals who may feel out of touch, or even intimidated by the concept of Data Analytics. By teaching this important topic in a safe and manageable learning format, we offer concrete technical skills and a confidence boost that will impact workplaces across Virginia and beyond.”
Course instructor, Robert Kluger, has developed a series of modules that provide instruction on how spreadsheets can be used to analyze transportation-specific data. The 10-15 minute weekly modules will be delivered as video recordings, providing an overview of types of data (such as quantitative, qualitative, ordinal and time-series), data visualization techniques (such as scatter plots, box-and-whisker plots, bar plots and histograms) and data distribution (such as descriptive stats, and probability and cumulative distribution functions).
The modules will also focus on hypothesis testing using real data sets. Participants can expect to perform a variety of statistical tests, including linear regression, with opportunities to interpret and apply the results. Weekly quizzes and web-based forum discussions will provide the basis for receiving class certification.
“Using field data or data from their own work environments, participants will gain a working knowledge about Excel and how to apply this knowledge in industry settings,” explained Kluger. “The exercises will demonstrate Excel’s ability to transform seemingly random data points into useful information, ultimately helping project managers and others make better informed decisions.”
Robert Klugeris aPhD candidate at the University of Virginia. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech and his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia. His primary research interests are in data analytics, highway safety, and ITS. In 2012 he was the Connected Vehicle/Infrastructure Student of the Year, and more recently he was the recipient of an Eisenhower Graduate Research Fellowship, conducting research at Turner Fairbank Highway Research Center for the past two years.
